I love this IP, but lets not mince words here: this looks like it is going to be an utter train wreck.
Lets look at some of the problems here… Games Workshop has gotten their strongest advantage in the market ripped off from them and turned into gold before their very eyes for years now. I don’t have any sympathy for them. They abuse their quasi-monopoly and are annoyingly litigious when it comes to their fans. So I don’t cry a single tear over the success Blizzard has with what is clearly 2 universes based on the creativity of the guys from Nottingham.
But this is just pathetic. Have you seen the cut-scenes in Starcraft 2? Scratch that. Have you seen the Final Fantasy movie from 9 years ago?
The Ultramarines movie looks bad. Not only badly executed from a technical perspective, it looks downright goofy. The designs don’t work. Everything looks out of proportion. Too short, too wide. Combine that with the decidedly pulp writing that Dan Abnett does well but that can’t carry a movie and we are in for a huge disappointment.
And that’s a damn shame…
